This blog post will discuss the key takeaways from the legislation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About the Accessible British Columbia Act<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Accessibility British Columbia Act was enacted to foster an inclusive environment and remove barriers for members of this community. It was the first bill introduced by Nicholas Simons, B.C.\u2019s Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of 2017, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ldac-acta.ca\/canadian-survey-on-disability-reports-a-demographic-employment-and-income-profile-of-canadians-with-disabilities-aged-15-years-and-over-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>22%, or about 6.2 million members of the Canadian population aged 15 years and over, have one or more disabilities<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The effort for an accessible Canada has been underway for quite some time and has also materialized in the form of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/blog\/canadian-crtc-caption-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>CRTC) caption laws<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/blog\/what-you-need-to-know-about-new-aoda-regulations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AODA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"btn btn-blue-blank\" href=\"https:\/\/go.3playmedia.com\/wp-aoda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>How the AODA Impacts Web and Online Video in Ontario<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Actions to Date<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the Accessible B.C. Act became law in June of 2021, the B.C Government has taken action in various areas, including but not limited to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improved rights of people using a guide or service dog<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improved services offered to people on disability assistance for those who are d\/Deaf and hard of hearing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appointment of 11 individuals as the first members of the Provincial Accessibility Committee<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proclamation of an annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/employment-social-development\/campaigns\/national-accessability-week.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>AccessAbility Week\u00a0<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launch of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/home\/accessible-government\/toolkit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Accessibility and Inclusion Toolkit<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a resource providing step-by-step<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">instructions to Government staff on how to create accessible digital content<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Looking Towards an Accessible Future<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Government has released a plan to continue working towards an accessible British Columbia through 2025. Effective September 1, 2022, over 750 public sector organizations will be required to inaugurate an accessibility plan and committee, as well as create a means to receive feedback on their accessibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The province has announced five priorities for the years 2022-25.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Creating a Culture of Accessibility and Inclusion<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further the push to foster a culture of accessibility by developing the \u201cBeing Accessible Strategy\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support accessibility leadership in public sectors through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/home\/accessible-government\/toolkit\/training-and-supports\/eaac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Employee Accessibility Advisory Council<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/digital.gov.bc.ca\/communities\/accessibility-community-of-practice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Accessibility Community of Practice<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Encourage staff to raise awareness about accessibility<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Information and Communications<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aoda.ca\/complying-with-aoda-wcag-2-0-distinguishable-content\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>AODA<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, ensure all of the Government\u2019s online media is accessible and meets <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.3playmedia.com\/resources\/recorded-webinars\/wbnr-10-01-2020-wcag\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>WCAG 2.0 Level AA<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requirements<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connect all rural households to high-speed internet by 2027\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure that emergency plans include the needs of people with disabilities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improve library access<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remove barriers to the identity verification process of the B.C. services card, which provides access to government services for B.C. residents<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Buildings, Infrastructure, and Public Spaces<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enhance the accessibility of courthouses with features such as cut curbs, automatic doors, and elevators<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.infrastructurebc.com\/projects\/projects-under-construction\/nanaimo-correctional-centre-replacement-project\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Nanaimo Correctional Centre Replacement Project<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an example of how accessibility improvements will be incorporated into the rebuilding and renovation process of B.C. correctional facilities<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have accessibility as an eligibility criterion for local governments and not-for-profit organizations to receive funding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build more integrated and active transportation systems based on principles of universal design<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a04. Employment in the B.C. Public Service<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continue to identify, remove, and prevent barriers to employment with the B.C. Government to ensure that its public service is made up of people who reflect the diversity of B.C.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This includes designing a centralized system to more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/careers-myhr\/about-the-bc-public-service\/diversity-inclusion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>adequately support hiring individuals who face barriers to employment<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Review and update current policy and procedures to improve accessibility\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide learning and mentorship to employees with disabilities through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www2.gov.bc.ca\/gov\/content\/careers-myhr\/job-seekers\/internship-co-op-opportunities\/work-able\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Work-Able Internship Program<\/b><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5.
