3Play Media Reintroduces Itself as Global Video Solutions Leader Backed by 15+ Years of AI Innovation

Refreshed brand showcases expansion of proprietary AI capabilities into multilingual video solutions across 50+ languages

BOSTON, MA – August 21, 20253Play Media today announced a comprehensive rebrand reflecting its transformation from a video accessibility tech company into a leader in video localization and global accessibility solutions, driven by breakthrough AI technology that delivers unprecedented quality control and customization.

Founded in 2008 out of MIT, 3Play Media was one of the first captioning companies to utilize AI, combining automated speech recognition (ASR) with custom modeling, patented software tools, and human review to deliver faster, more affordable video accessibility solutions to millions of people. With over 15 years of experience honing AI models for speech tech, 3Play Media is now applying their learnings to audio description, dubbing, and subtitling, where AI technology has only recently caught up.

“Our expansion represents more than adding language capabilities—it’s about reimagining how organizations reach global audiences while maintaining the highest accessibility and quality standards,” said Josh Miller, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of 3Play Media. “We’ve always been focused on enabling content consumption by any user in any mode desired – this expansion is a logical expansion for us. By leveraging advances in speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and computer vision, we’ve unlocked more efficient and cost-effective ways to deliver inclusive video experiences at scale.”

Unlike competitors offering either AI-only or traditional human solutions, 3Play Media offers fully customizable, hybrid workflows that enable customers to choose the precise blend of AI and human review that best aligns with their goals. Whether that’s premium AI, a light cleanup to remove hallucinations and other basic AI pitfalls, full review to deliver compliance with major accessibility laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and European Accessibility Act (EAA), or comprehensive expert review for premium streaming content, 3Play Media gives organizations the flexibility to meet their quality, budget, turnaround, and brand needs.

“What makes 3Play unique is our ability to give customers complete control of the range of options between AI only and comprehensive expert review,” said Chris Antunes, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of 3Play Media. “We believe the future lies in intelligently combining AI and human expertise to give customers unparalleled brand and budget safety.”

The refreshed brand brings 3Play’s 17 years of AI expertise to the forefront and positions 3Play as a technology-forward leader with a sharper, more contemporary design that reflects their evolution to a global, AI-enabled video accessibility and localization platform.

“Our new brand identity communicates both technical sophistication and a deep understanding of global content needs,” said Lily Bond, Chief Growth Officer. “It positions us alongside leading technology companies while reinforcing the trust and reliability 3Play customers expect.”

3Play Media’s solutions integrate seamlessly with existing workflows through 40+ platform integrations and custom API solutions, serving clients from major broadcasters and streaming platforms to educational institutions worldwide.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Steve to our leadership team as we enter an exciting phase of growth and innovation,” said Chris Antunes, Co-CEO and Co-founder of 3Play Media. “His deep financial expertise in scaling technology companies will be instrumental as we continue to develop new solutions.”

Press Release: 3Play Media Releases Annual Study, Finds ASR Technology Showing Signs of Plateau

Download the Free 2025 State of ASR Report

BOSTON, Mass., May 20, 2025 — While Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technologies are maturing and becoming more sophisticated, human review remains essential for meeting accessibility standards, according to the latest State of ASR report by 3Play Media, the leading media accessibility provider in North America, released today.

“Our research continues to show that while ASR technology has made remarkable strides, we’re witnessing an increasing plateau in accuracy improvements for English pre-recorded content,” Josh Miller, co-CEO and co-Founder, 3Play Media, said. “The gulf between the leading engines and the rest of the field has widened. However, the error rates across all engines still fall short of meeting accessibility requirements, reaffirming that human-in-the-loop workflows remain critical for captioning and transcription use cases.”

The study evaluated speech-to-text technology as it applies to captioning and transcription across 205 hours of diverse audio content, representing a 30% increase in testing volume from the previous year. The expanded dataset of over 1.7 million words spans multiple industries and use cases, providing unparalleled insight into real-world ASR performance. The research evaluated eight ASR engines along with Gemini, a multimodal large language model (LLM) prompted to perform transcription.

A key finding from this year’s report is that Whisper X performs significantly differently from the original Whisper models, showing no signs of the hallucination behavior that was observed with Whisper Large V2 and V3, which demonstrated significantly higher rates of hallucinations compared to other engines. Meanwhile, AssemblyAI’s Universal-2 model and Whisper X slightly outperformed Speechmatics based on error rates, though all three stood substantially ahead of other engines tested.

As observed in previous years, ASR accuracy varies significantly across different industries, reinforcing the need for specialized approaches depending on content type and use case. The study also found that LLMs are not yet viable replacements for dedicated ASR engines in transcription tasks. The greatest challenge for ASR technology remains sports content, with error rates 3x higher than the best performing industries due to complicated noise environments, unscripted speech, player and coach names, and numerical information with unique phrasing conventions.

Given the plateau in improvements, the report indicates that future ASR innovations are likely to focus less on incremental improvements to English pre-recorded content accuracy and more on real-time applications and non-English language capabilities.

Press Release: 3Play Media Launches Global Linguist Marketplace and AI-Enabled Language Solutions for Video, Positioning Businesses for European Accessibility Act (EAA) Compliance

BOSTON, Mass., March 27, 2025 – 3Play Media, the industry leader in media accessibility solutions, today announced the launch of its global linguist marketplace along with its cutting-edge, AI-Enabled accessibility and localization solutions for video-forward businesses across media & entertainment and enterprise. This timely release comes as the European Accessibility Act (EAA) is set to take effect in June 2025, placing 3Play Media at the forefront of helping organizations meet new captioning and audio description requirements in multiple languages.

Built on state-of-the-art AI models and workflows, these solutions enable organizations to automate their media localization processes, allowing them to expand globally faster and more cost-effectively while maintaining quality. Whether you require subtitles, dubs, or accessibility services for your video content, businesses can leverage 3Play Media’s global offering for distribution across the globe – whether you have a full original series or a quick training video.

Josh Miller, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of 3Play Media, stated, “In our conversations with numerous content publishers and localization buyers, a recurring theme emerged: they need to be ready to comply with EAA requirements quickly while maintaining quality. Our AI-enabled solutions can be deeply integrated into your supply chain, positioning businesses to meet growth goals and the upcoming EAA requirements efficiently.”

3Play Media processes captioning and audio description for thousands of files every day with turnarounds ranging from days to hours, underpinned by a large distributed workforce. “It was just a matter of time before we expanded this proprietary model to languages outside of the U.S. and to additional services like subtitling and dubbing,” added Chris Antunes, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of 3Play Media. Adding linguists across the globe to their patented marketplace will allow 3Play Media to build global language support for subtitles, dubbing, and accessibility services with the same scale and speed as its English solutions.

To help accelerate customer adoption, 3Play Media is already working closely with a select group of charter customers that are eager to evolve their localization and accessibility workflows. Gaia, one such customer, is partnering with 3Play Media to make their French and German video content accessible for EAA compliance. “As a long-time customer, we rely on the consistent high quality that 3Play delivers and we trust them to support the new languages in an innovative, cost-effective way,” said Lorraine Lynch, Head of Digital Operations at Gaia, Inc.

3Play Media will be demoing its latest innovations in subtitling, dubbing, transcription, and audio description at an exclusive webinar on April 15, 2025.

For an early preview, 3Play Media will be doing hourly demos throughout the week of the NAB conference (April 5-9, 2025 in Las Vegas) at their booth #W4115.

Press Release: 3Play Media Launches AI-Enabled Video Accessibility Solutions to Help Universities Meet 2026 ADA Requirements

AI-Enabled Accessibility Solutions Built to Aid ADA Compliance

The 2026 ADA Title II compliance deadline represents a turning point for public institutions and universities as they race to ensure their digital content meets accessibility standards. The stakes are high — not only to avoid legal repercussions, but also to uphold inclusivity and equity for all learners.

For universities already grappling with tight budgets and the complexities of hybrid learning environments, achieving compliance can feel like a daunting task. The good news? Innovative accessibility solutions are emerging to meet this challenge head-on. At 3Play Media, we’re committed to empowering educational institutions with tools that not only meet compliance requirements but also reduce administrative burdens and operational costs.

Today, we’re excited to announce the launch of our AI-enabled accessibility solutions that are built to scale with the evolving needs of higher education to ensure inclusivity without breaking the bank.

New accessibility solutions help higher education institutions achieve compliance while reducing costs significantly.

Boston, Mass., January 21, 2025 – 3Play Media, the leading media accessibility provider in North America, announced today the launch of a comprehensive package of patented, AI-enabled video accessibility tools, including audio description, captioning, and live captioning solutions, specifically designed to help universities achieve compliance with expanded ADA Title II regulations by the 2026 enforcement deadline.

“Our solution gives universities not just the ability to add captions and audio descriptions to thousands of courses – but the confidence that they are ensuring quality across the board.”

3Play Media, the leading media accessibility provider in North America, announced today the launch of a comprehensive package of AI-enabled video accessibility tools designed to help universities comply with expanded ADA Title II regulations before the 2026 enforcement deadline. The suite of patented, industry-first solutions includes AI-enabled audio description, captioning, and live captioning.

3Play Media’s new solution set uses patented technology to combine AI-enabled audio description and captioning with expert human review. Universities can set quality thresholds with 3Play Media’s predicted accuracy measures for AI and automate upgrade paths for files that require human review. This allows universities to use AI responsibly while ensuring consistent and premium quality across all video content. For live classroom content, students will have the ability to toggle between a live verbatim transcript and a real-time AI summary of the lecture.

“One of the biggest challenges with AI is not knowing where it’s good and where there may be mistakes across a large number of files,” said Josh Miller, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of 3Play Media. “We have been measuring the quality of AI for video accessibility for over 15 years, and we’re using all of that expertise to give schools visibility into where the AI is performing well and where human support is required. With 3Play, they have a full suite of AI-enabled and human-reviewed solutions so they can prioritize content for compliance effectively.”

Under Title II, public colleges and universities will need to make all course libraries and website video compliant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA guidelines. With the significantly expanded scale required by Title II, meeting these accessibility standards with existing solutions could pose significant financial and administrative burdens for higher education institutions. Working directly with universities to understand their needs, 3Play Media aims to provide the flexibility, scale, and affordability needed by universities to achieve compliance and deliver high quality accessibility to students.

“AI-Enabled Audio Description will transform the availability of audio description, which has historically been expensive and difficult to produce,” said Chris Antunes, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of 3Play Media. “Our solution gives universities not just the ability to add captions and audio descriptions to thousands of courses – but the confidence that they are ensuring quality across the board.” 3Play Media’s patented, AI-enabled audio description solution is the first of its kind in the market.

In addition to the full spectrum of AI and human solutions available for audio description, captioning, and live captioning, the 3Play Media platform integrates directly with all major video platforms, lecture capture systems, and LMSs. For large libraries of courses requiring compliance, this automates the workflow and administrative workload necessary to manage video accessibility at scale. With the 2026 compliance deadline approaching, 3Play Media’s solutions provide universities with the tools they need to achieve compliance without compromising on quality or affordability.

3Play Media Revolutionizes Localization with Human-In-The-Loop AI Dubbing Services

BOSTON, Mass., April 2, 20243Play Media, the leading media accessibility provider in North America, is pioneering an innovative human-in-the-loop AI Dubbing solution. At launch, the new AI Dubbing product combines human-edited transcripts and translations with best-in-class AI voice matching to produce a premium, cost-effective, and highly accurate audio track at scale.

“3Play Media is addressing AI Dubbing differently than the rest of the market… We deeply understand the value of human-in-the-loop AI solutions, and are excited to launch an AI Dubbing product that organizations can trust.”

             – Chris Antunes, Co-CEO and Co-Founder

“Outside of top-tier media, the economics and timelines of content localization don’t work for most companies,” Josh Miller, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of 3Play Media, said.  “And frankly, the quality of fully automated dubbing is a brand risk for organizations trying to enter international markets. Global companies, emerging media, and publishers are looking to balance cost without sacrificing accuracy and quality.”

“3Play Media is addressing AI Dubbing differently than the rest of the market – for the last 15 years, we have built our business on combining technology and people to produce cost-effective, quality captions, subtitles, and audio description at scale. We deeply understand the value of human-in-the-loop AI solutions, and are excited to launch an AI Dubbing product that organizations can trust,” Co-CEO and Co-Founder, Chris Antunes added. “Unlike new-to-market solutions, we also have a robust platform, integrations, and API workflows that are designed for ingesting and delivering video assets at scale, making the user experience seamless.”

Benefits of 3Play Media’s AI Dubbing

3Play Media’s AI Dubbing product offers exceptional quality and accuracy at a fraction of the cost and turnaround of traditional, human voice artist dubbing solutions. 3Play is uniquely situated to maximize human-in-the-loop workflows to ensure users receive the optimal combination of people and AI throughout the dubbing process. At launch, AI Dubbing will be available in English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish with more languages to be added.

AI Dubbing delivers the following functionality and benefits:

            • Easy Ordering. Upload videos for dubbing via our user-friendly platform or automatically via API or integration.
            • Rapid Turnaround. Even with a human in the loop, get high-quality output in days – compared to traditional workflows taking weeks.
            • Human-in-the-loop Transcription & Translation. The foundation of a great dub is an accurate source language transcript and translation, precisely timed with the speech in the source audio. 3Play Media provides the highest transcription accuracy in the market, then uses professional linguists to produce a premium script for dubbing.
            • Translation Glossaries. Brand matters – and translation glossaries help protect brand voice when translating to another language. By tapping into stored translation profiles, you can reliably meet quality output across all of your orders.
            • Preserve Background Music and Handle Multiple Speakers. Automated dubbing only works if the final experience doesn’t distract the viewer from the intended experience. Ensuring the background audio is preserved, and the speech elements are replaced, creates a superior experience.
            • Voice Matching. Our AI Dubbing solution utilizes voice matching, which pairs the speakers in your source video with the closest synthetic voice match across a huge library of authentic, high-quality voices.
            • Human QA. We offer one final check with a human to ensure the timing, voice, phrasing, and speech rate of the dubbed track are natural.
            • File Download. Upon completion of the service, easily download your dubbed tracks in whatever formats you require – or post back automatically via integration or API.

3Play Media Introduces Virtual Caption Encoding Solution to Simplify Live Captioning Workflows

Solution eliminates the need for additional live captioning hardware, delivering high-accuracy and low-latency captions to streaming platforms

BOSTON, March 29, 2023__3Play Media, the leading video accessibility provider, announced today the availability of its live virtual caption encoding solution. The solution, which streamlines the live captioning workflow from listening through delivery, reduces the friction that exists for organizations and ensures an engaging audience experience.

“Captioning of live video is causing significant challenges for corporations, higher education institutions, and over-the-top (OTT) platforms that broadcast live events. There simply are not enough resources to watch carefully over every detail of a live event, especially once it has started, and there’s more need than ever to ensure accessibility is seamless. Virtual and hybrid events have proven to be pandemic-proof – in fact, according to Forrester, more than 80 percent of event leaders plan to conduct the same number or more virtual events over the next 12 months as they did last year,” Josh Miller, co-CEO and co-founder, 3Play Media said. “Our virtual caption encoding solution takes a modern approach to live captioning, simplifying captioning workflows to deliver highly accurate and low-latency captions to our customers, ensuring a seamless experience.”

With the live virtual encoding solution, 3Play Media customers send a real-time messaging protocol (RTMP) stream to 3Play Media’s platform, where 3Play Media generates automated or professionally created captions based on the request of the customer. That stream with encoded captions is then delivered to any platform supporting RTMP streams and the decoding of CEA-608 captions, the standard captioning protocol for analog television.

The benefits of 3Play Media’s live virtual caption encoding solution include:

              • Intuitive event scheduling interface. Many solutions still require customers to call and schedule their events manually.
              • Low latency captions. Captions will appear at about a 2-second delay versus the broadcast standard of 4-6 seconds after the visual content, ensuring an audience using captions can stay in real-time with the content.
              • Live Auto Caption failover. In the unfortunate and rare case a human captioner loses their connection, our patent-pending solution will automatically failover to ASR captions.
              • Send captions anywhere. Captions can be sent to any streaming platforms that support RTMP-based streaming protocols and decoding of CEA-608 captions.
              • Post-event that guarantees 99 percent accuracy. After the event, the raw transcript of the entire event can be downloaded and upgraded to guarantee almost 100 percent accuracy.

Live virtual caption encoding is a new product offering made possible by 3Play Media’s acquisition of Captionmax last year, with more live innovation to come throughout the year.

Say hello to 3Play Media’s Access Player!

Making your media accessible, interactive, and SEO-friendly just got a whole lot easier.

                What is the Access Player?

3Play Media’s Access Player enables you to publish fully accessible media playback to your website with no development effort.

The Access Player works with your existing media player of choice, integrating additional accessibility capabilities, such as closed captions, interactive transcripts, and audio description—all in the same interface.

In addition to increased accessibility for your users, you’ll also get SEO benefits, making your content more discoverable.

As a publisher, you can create one accessible experience using a convenient user interface or programmatically publish accessible experiences across all of your content.

There are two versions of the Access Player: Access Player and Access Player+. With Access Player+, you’ll get all of the accessibility features available in the Access Player plus the ability to customize the look, support multi-language experiences and increased publishing volume, and more.

The Access Player is currently available in beta. For more information, please fill out this interest form.

                Core Features and Benefits

                • Fully Accessible Playback Capabilities: Media players today often support captions, subtitles, and maybe multiple audio tracks, but they don’t make it easy to search for content being spoken in a video, support audio description, or connect an SEO-friendly transcript. With 3Play Media’s Access Player, you make it possible for your audience to consume your content in a way suitable for their needs.
                • Interactive Transcript: Make it easy for your audience to find content in your video or audio, control the playback speed, and reinforce comprehension with a fully synced interactive transcript.
                • Brandable: Your company’s commitment to accessibility is a reflection of your brand’s values. Be proud of the accessible experience you create by making it your own with our visual customizations.
                • Multi-Language Support: We know that your users don’t just speak English. The Access Player can detect the preferred language of your audience and support multiple languages with one video player.

                Why use the Access Player?

Generating accessible and legally compliant content is paramount. However, publishing multiple versions of content—one accessible with captions or audio descriptions and one not—creates overhead costs and is prone to mistakes. A single digital experience for all users, with or without disabilities, creates a better experience for everyone involved. The 3Play Access Player is the best way to reach and connect with your entire audience, regardless of their needs.

Additionally, 3Play Media’s Access Player enables you to publish fully accessible media playback to your website with no development effort, reducing the cost and effort of publishing accessible content.

The Access Player also works with both audio-only and video content, making it the perfect solution for any kind of media.

                  Introducing 3Play Media

Becoming the New Market Leader with Chris Antunes and Josh Miller [Allied Podcast]

We’re excited to share some big news!

You may already know that 3Play Media welcomed Captionmax and NCC to the family earlier this year. This acquisition made 3Play Media the new market leader, allowing us to provide a robust suite of high quality, reliable media accessibility solutions across industries.

For over six months, the teams from 3Play Media and Captionmax have been hard at work integrating the incredible people and services that delight our customers each day. And now, we’re thrilled to announce that we’re operating under one brand: 3Play Media

Cheers and applause - we're celebrating the rebrand of 3Play Media!

Why Captionmax is now 3Play Media

Founded in 1993 as a one-man operation, Captionmax grew and nurtured close relationships in the enterprise, broadcast, and streaming media markets for nearly 30 years. Captionmax’s staff includes passionate, long-tenured captioners and account managers with a deep knowledge of closed captioning and other critical media accessibility services. This experience, along with Captionmax’s advancements in live broadcast technology, enables 3Play Media to further deepen its relationships with media organizations.

The synergies between 3Play Media and Captionmax – and how both of our customer bases benefit from this relationship – are obvious, making the rebrand a natural transition. 3Play’s deep expertise in technology-driven accessibility at scale combined with our own history with live broadcast creates a compelling, complete media solution that cements 3Play as the most robust media accessibility provider in North America.Truck Morrison, former CEO and President, Captionmax; now SVP of Corporate Development, 3Play Media

During both the acquisition and integration processes, it was clear that Captionmax and 3Play Media have always been intrinsically aligned on the things that matter most: customer delight, quality service, innovative solutions, and a passion to make media accessible to all. Unifying under one brand enables a centralized experience for any media accessibility services our customers may need now or in the future.

Listen to 3Play co-founders Chris and Josh discuss our shared values on Allied 🤝

What does this mean for you?

Captionmax is now 3Play Media, but the service and quality you love most about us isn’t going anywhere. Because we’ve not only integrated services, but also teams, customers can expect to maintain their usual workflow and point of contact, without any service interruptions or drops in product quality.

National Captioning Canada (NCC), the largest live captioning provider in Canada and a subsidiary of Captionmax, has been rebranded to 3Play Media Canada, which will remain focused exclusively on serving the Canadian media accessibility market.

With all under the 3Play Media umbrella, no other company in the market can deliver the scale and reliability of the 3Play offering, cementing our position as the leader in quality media accessibility services in North America. Josh Miller, co-founder and co-CEO, 3Play Media

As 3Play’s media accessibility solutions and service offerings expand in the future, our staff will continue to work alongside customers to transition to the most efficient solutions for their media accessibility needs.

What other changes can I expect?

We are thrilled to provide our customers with a greater suite of premium media accessibility services. We now offer everything from an array of new options in captioning and audio description, to platform integrations and exciting features powered by 3Play Media’s innovative technology.

By incorporating Captionmax into the 3Play Media platform, we are now able to deliver a high-end, highly customizable and scalable solution for post-production services to our media clients. Tools such as As Broadcast Scripts (ABS) – the transcription of a film or television broadcast for subtitles, captioning, and translation – and voice artist audio description help us provide the most innovative solutions and tools to support the media and entertainment industry. Chris Antunes, co-founder and co-CEO, 3Play Media

To celebrate our shared brand, 3Play Media is hosting a virtual public event open to all on Thursday, September 29th at 1:00 PM ET. See how you can do more with 3Play, and how our integration makes us the all-star media accessibility partner you’ve been looking for.

At our 2022 ACCESS conference, 3Play Media co-founders and co-CEOs Chris Antunes and Josh Miller sat down for a special bonus episode of Allied Podcast, where they outlined their vision for the future of 3Play following the acquisition of Captionmax. Press Release: 3Play Media Launches Podcast Transcription Solution

As podcast platforms stare down litigation for lacking transcripts, accessibility leader launches new solution that increases user flexibility and transcription accuracy

BOSTON, Mass., March 24, 2022 – 3Play Media, the leading media accessibility provider, announced today that it has extended its world-leading professional transcription services to the growing podcast industry. With its technology, 3Play Media solves an immediate gap for podcast producers who recognize that the high error rate of machine transcription jeopardizes the integrity of their content experience. The podcast solution is already being used by 3Play Media customers, including This American Life

“3Play Media has always supported transcription for audio-only files, but this new solution for podcasters represents an entry into an underserved market of podcast creators who’ve been largely left to their own devices to solve their production and publishing workflows,” Josh Miller, co-CEO and co-founder, 3Play Media, said. “Time is money in the content industry, and our solution makes it possible to have the high-quality transcript produced in the background while producers focus on what they do best.”

With large podcast platforms facing legal action over inaccessibility, podcasters have shifted their focus to becoming more accessible by providing transcripts. Without transcripts, podcasts are completely inaccessible to the d/Deaf and hard of hearing community, which makes up 20% of the US population. Using 3Play Media’s platform, podcasters can upload their audio files seamlessly via the 3Play platform, integration, or API, and a high quality transcript will be returned within 24 hours. Progressive Delivery allows for the automatic speech recognition (ASR) transcript to be delivered immediately, followed by the styled and 99%+ accurate transcript when it is complete. This enables producers to ensure access and to not delay publishing their podcasts, regardless of frequency.

3Play Media is the only transcription provider which fully supports custom style guides, which many podcasts, including This American Life, use. This enables podcasters to provide special instructions – like speaker labels and unique grammar requests – that support brand requirements. Transcripts can be delivered via API or downloaded in any file format users prefer so it can be copied onto a webpage or uploaded to their podcast hosting platform. 3Play Media is also the only provider to guarantee its turnaround deadlines with the added flexibility of Progressive Delivery.

For more information on Podcast Transcription, visit https://www.3playmedia.com/services/podcast-transcription/ or attend 3Play Media’ virtual event, ACCESS, on March 30th.
